(NO)vember: Because You Can’t Say Yes, Until You’ve Said No

NOvember

I have neglected ayminor.com in the last few months, but for good reason –

In September, I published a collection of short stories, Climbing Vines submitted by 16 black UPENN alumnae and undergraduate women. #IDoIt

In October, it was time to switch gears to my Dad’s 60th birthday – a surprise. Needless to say I almost lost my mind for the second month in a row.

Handmade centerpieces I created for the party.

Which brings me to (NO)vember.

Although the past few months have been about things that I love, and people that I love, it’s time to focus on me. Other than my required obligations, mainly being my job, if I’m not interested in attending or participating, the answer is no. And what does that mean? I can finally get back to my blog! And music! And naps! #NOvember

Here’s an exercise I might try from Oprah.com to make sure “no” rolls off the tongue:

1. For one week, keep track of how many times you say yes to something that is not on your Absolute Yes List.

2. At the end of the week, tally up the number…surprised? Awareness is the first step to realigning your decisions and priorities.

3. Make a list of five things you’d like to say no to. Start by thinking about these questions.

If you could say no to someone or something, knowing that there would be absolutely no hard feelings or negative consequences, who or what would you say no to? Is there a project you would give up? A relationship you would end? A date you might break?

At first, saying no might create some internal guilt. But the tough choices you make today will help you reach a happier place tomorrow.

2014, The Year I Stuck to My New Year’s Resolutions | “Almost Is Never Enough” (Cover)

I can finally cross off one of the top 3 items on my bucket list — I performed at my first open mic!!

Every year at Penn, the Inspiration and the Excelano Project collaborate for a night of love talk and slow jams. As an Inspiration alum I had already planned on attending the show, so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to take on one of my greatest fear — performing solo.

For once, right after I decided to perform, I had the perfect song in mind. “Almost Is Never Enough,” a power-ballad on Ariana Grande’s debut album Yours Truly was instantly one of my favorites off the top-charted release. The song, a duet with The Wanted’s Nathan Sykes, is the perfect mash-up of 90’s-inspired R&B, with the flair of a contemporary anthem.

Additional photos and video from the show coming soon!

J Music: Fela: Rhythms of Desire – The Inspiration

This weekend I traveled down to Philly for The Inspiration Fall 2012 Show in collaboration with African Rythms, Fela: Rhythms of Desire.

The Inspiration is a co-ed a cappella singing group founded in 1989 for students of the University of Pennsylvania. It serves as a musical outlet for individuals with a desire to celebrate thelegacy of the music of theAfrican Diaspora.

I believe the Inspiration is among the top groups on campus, but I may be bias as I am a proud Inspiration alum!  Don’t just take my word for it, check out a few performances below and judge for yourself. ‘89 #iSing

“Hold On” by Moses Hogan

“Take Care” by Drake Ft. Rihanna [Influenced by Gil Scott-Heron]

Forgive the commentary I was on double duty (proud alum & videographer)!

The set list also included “Stay” by Elle Varner, “No Letting Go” by Wayne Wonder, “Party” by Beyonce, and “Kiss” by Prince. More videos coming soon!

True Life: Last Week of My Undergrad Career | Day 1

A seven day blog series.

After all of the darkness and sadness, Soon comes happiness
If I surround myself with positive things, I’ll gain prosperity

A gem from Michelle.

darkness and sadness → college • happiness → graduation • positive things → Naeemah• prosperity → an A on my exam

I have listened to that song 5x times in the past hour trying to pump  myself up to study for this last final.  I made the mistake of going on Twitter and Facebook earlier and seeing all the “Done!” posts really killed my spirit. Nonetheless it is the 7th — a lucky number, my birthday (Sept), but more importantly it symbolizes the 7 days I have left as an undergrad student.

It’s fitting that I start out these last 7 days doing what I have done for the past four years—- freaking out, procrastinating, yet all in all getting my work done. My last final is tomorrow morning at 9 am.

I’ll keep this post short as I need to pass my final to graduate, but I’m hoping to make this week unforgettable.
