2016
/twenty sixteen/
noun

  1. a period of 366 days in which I struggled, cried (a lot), lost hope, found some, opened my heart, experienced new cities, made many new friends and collaborators, challenged myself through creative projects and uncomfortable circumstances, and took some exciting steps toward my lofty goals

2017
/twenty seventeen/
noun

  1. a period of 365 days that has me shook. that I don’t feel ready for. that will challenge me in new ways, some of which will be undesired. yet a period in which I will prevail over the hurdles that have plagued me for nearly two years. a period in which I will rediscover purpose in my work. in which I will build on the relationships I forged in 2016. in which I will travel more domestically and internationally. in which I will put my mental, physical, and emotional health first.

Thank you to all of my family, friends, and readers who continue to support ayminor.com, may you all have a blessed 2017!

My curiosity got the best of me. I’m “not a rapper,” but I had to check out my first Made in the DMV event this past Monday, Aug. 15 at the Blind Whino. DMV Track Stars is an event for artists and producers to gain exposure and feedback in front of a panel of music industry professionals and their peers. As the night progressed, the space filled with music-lovers, friends, and family to support the up and coming artists showcasing their latest material. Definitely a dope event, keep an eye out for the next one!

Did you know there are certain brands of water that are better for vocalists than others? On Saturday, July 9, I attended a brunch with singer-songwriter YahZarah to talk all things vocals with an intimate group of music enthusiasts. Check out thecreativenomads.org to learn more about the events and resources Creative Nomads provides for arts professionals in the DMV area. You can find YahZarah on tour with Lenny Kravitz! “Your city is remarkable not only for its beauty. It is also, of all the cities in the United States, the one whose name, the world over, conjures up the most visions and more than any other, incites one to dream.”

J Photos: A Trip to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park

In October, I took my first trip (that I can remember) to Atlanta to visit a close friend from home. One of our first stops upon my arrival was the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park. I am ashamed to say, I had no idea the magnitude of the site — it spans several blocks and includes MLK Jr.’s childhood home and church, and an interactive visitor center — I was in awe. I encourage everyone to visit this pristine historical site; when I make it back to Atlanta, I plan to spend at least one full day taking in everything there is to learn and experience.

Find more information about the historic site here.

“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. This is the judgement. Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you going to do for others.”

— Martin Luther King, Jr.
